I was looking through the access logs for the website a few days ago and I noticed quite a few error codes showing up. They were all looking for a favicon file, so I took the time to create one. It’s that little blue/red thing that shows up in the address bar and it would show up in your bookmarks too.
Not that the file was really required or anything… just a nice touch. And it keeps the access logs a little cleaner.
favicons are good. I’ve gone through a couple of extra steps to make sure mine show up and are found and all that.
And keeping the logs clear is a good thing in and of itself, no matter which steps it took to get there.
fun fun fun
Oh, and I’m really satisfied with the favicon that is setup on crabby.4101.org. That one is amazingly fitting.
OK. What is special about a flavicon? It looks like a tiny picture. Cool, but, still just a tiny picture. I can appreciate that it would be a challenge to find an image that looks like you want when it is little bitty, and there would be the usual challenge to greate a logo that would mean something and look good for a long time. But when i looked up flavicon they were talking about it like it was something one should pay to have created, calling it a multi-resolution picture??? What is multi-resolution?
The general idea is that a company will have a logo that can be used at multiple sizes. When you see a sign for Yahoo!, it is sometimes just a ‘Y!’. Admittedly, you don’t see that often; however, you can see it used on their website as their favicon. The reason some people call it a ‘multi-resolution’ image is that you can create an image (especially icon images) that come in multiple sizes. Small sizes for a favicon, a little larger for a yahoo toolbar, possibly for a yahoo shortcut on the desktop…. all different sizes, same image.
You’ll see people offering their services to create this image as they are offering professional graphic design to companies or individuals who want some symbol they can use in any correspondence. It is an important business; a mediocre image won’t help people remember you (quick: what’s the symbol for Enron?) but a good image will help people remember you.
Our favicon isn’t something that I see myself using on a letterhead, but it does serve the purpose of a simple favicon. Feel free to create a replacement favicon if you like.
🙂 Not looking to replace it… But was thinking about following Yahoo’s example and make a W for the White family page. It was just the multi-thing that made me wonder if there was something special about the image.
you might look at WikiPedia and make sure you don’t do something like their version. Just to make sure you don’t look like you are deliberatly taking from them.
