Chiropractic mixed bag

Well … finally found a new chiropractor.

It was a mixed experience. He did x-rays, always fun to look at those, but he also does the ‘relaxing’ electrical stimulation that feels like I’m being gnawed at by thousands of tiny ants.

I’m leaving for a whirlwind of work travel in just a few days, and so the chiropractor tells me he wants to see me every day this week. Is that just because I’m leaving town or something else?

Most of our first visit was spent on the pitch, that chiropractic is a safe and effective medical treatment. The pitch about spinal adjustments. The pitch about spinal alignment and pinched nerves. The pitch about nerves supporting muscle and organ function. The pitch about … about everything. I watched a 10 minute video pitch. He sent me home with another CD containing another pitch.

But on the other hand … my previous chiropractor could not adjust one side of my neck. At all. It just kept getting stiffer and stiffer, and .. and nothing. I liked him, he did great back work, but my neck was too stubborn for him. This guy? WHAM. I think the man adjusted my skull. It’s an hour later, and I still feel kind of sick. Which is a good thing. (which I know from experience, not because of the pitch)

So … do I assume that the annoying intro is past? Am I through all the pitches? Do I simply agree that, yes, after 6 months of no treatment and facing a month of travel, I need to have daily visits for the next 3 days? Does the fact that he gave a really great first adjustment trump the fact that he hooks me up to relax-you’re-being-eaten-by-ants electrodes?

  1. I’d go back on my own schedule and tell him that the ‘relaxing’ stimulation feels like you are being attacked by ants and you have this childhood thing with ants that you really just don’t want to get into so it makes the electrode thing not relax and justs brings back bad memories and… stuff.

You can invent the rest of the ‘stuff’. I think most people who are really uncomfortable with something tend to use long run on sentences, so the above should work. Maybe taking a moment to swat at ‘ants’ on your arms/legs while you talk about it would be good.

  2. while part of me laughs at what chris tells you to do. i would say that too.

it’s like what our buddy does at the sushi bar when we get an assorted plate (which is usually considered chef’s choice)… “Hey could you please ask the chef to not use Octopus or Squid, I’m allergic”
Works everytime. He’s not allergic, just ewww icked by it. Having it on the plate detracts from an enjoyable experience

I would just tell him…and if you need to use long, some what rushed run on sentences, just go for it 😉

  3. Third visit .. second adjustment.

Again, a very high quality adjustment. Even threw in a shoulder technique I hadn’t seen before, which was effective.

No pitches. And no electro-table, either. Maybe I did enough complaining about it yesterday. I got the roller ball table instead. Non-objectionable … not really anything, actually. Don’t know why anyone would make a fuss over it, but the techs assure me that people do.

Going in again tomorrow. But I did cancel the Friday appointment he had wanted me to come in for.

So it’s still a mixed bag .. but getting better. And the adjustments are top notch, and that is what counts …

  4. Often good chiropractors will have you go thru an orientation or something like. They do this so there is no argument (you cannot get out if it even if you do know it all) so all their patients start with the same information. It is a pain, but it is not a bad thing, especially for a branch of medicine that so many are not familiar with.

I would stay with the doctor if the adjustment is superrior. That is what counts.

Also, the frequent visits at first is standard. Your spine becomes accustomed to a certain position and will slip back into it almost immediately. If you come in frequently and it is put back onto place often it is more likely to become accustomed to the correct position and to hold it faster. So don’t let that one put you off either.

I am glad you found a good one first try. Was he recommended? Was he your fist try there?

    And what whirlwind of travel???
