The Package Game

I think that all delivery trucks should have GPS units installed and the data should be broadcast to people expecting packages.   Not so much a ‘truck is on 12th street traveling south’ type location; just a general city block would be great.  Showing what areas have already been visited would be an obvious feature.  I’m sure that the efficiency systems FedEx/UPS use make sure drivers don’t come back to an area multipe times during a delivery trip.  Wasted gas, time, and all that.

See, this would help out people like me that wonder when the truck is going to get here and where are they and WAIT! was that loud noise the construction next door pulling in a large truck or is that the delivery guy?  If I could look at a map and see “oh, he’s on the north side of town” would mean I wouldn’t be so distracted.  I’d just keep refreshing the tracking page every 10 minutes.  (or whatever update interval they set; 10 minutes would be good)

I’ll now go back to wondering where in the city the FedEx truck is wandering and when the UPS guy is going to stop by.

  1. I agree. The ‘package is out for delivery’ – at 4am – update they give is not nearly helpful enough.

In fact, knowing that it’s out for delivery, that it was out for delivery 4 hours before my day started, and that it’s only 2 1/2 hours from the depot to me … it’s tantalizing.

And I’m sure their trucks – probably even their drivers – do have GPS tracking. It’s just that WE don’t get to know about it. Cause they know we’d crash their servers or something. That we’d start driving out to intercept the truck when it was only a few blocks from where we work, and why wait for it to get all the way back to where I live?

    Sigh.

So – I take it you’re waiting for a package?

Speaking of which, I mailed you a package. But by postal service, so no tracking at all. Mailed Saturday – will probably get there before Aleah’s birthday. Not sure on anything more precise than that. It’s her gift, which I didn’t want to lose in the packing, and some Chick Fil A books that I’ve stockpiled for her amusement. Add them to the pile of Chick Fil A books.

I hope your package – all your packages – arrive soon.

  2. We did get your package to Aleah. It is currently up in her closet, high away from where she might be interested in just what is in that box.

I highly doubt she’ll care it’s in Christmas wrapping – she’ll probably like that.

And my packages did arrive – much enjoyment has followed. Will probably post about them sometime.
