Stepping on the scale

When I talked to Ramona a few days ago she asked me if I had lost any more. I told her it had been a while since I had stepped on the scale because I was a little afraid of what I would see. I am still doing the vegetarian thing, but the longer I do it the more I figure out how. At first my refrigerator was not as well stocked and I was not as sure of myself when it came to picking out good things to eat so I ate less. Now days I am eating more.

But I have been thinking I should weigh in since that conversation. This morning I did. I am relieved to say that I am still losing, though, of course, not as fast. My weight loss, to date, is 40 pounds. 🙂

  1. That is awesome. Keep it up and start talking some walks or other activity. That the part I am mostly missing in my own If you can do it I can do it

  2. I am so glad that you are working on you diet and exercise.

I’m not up to walking but I am starting back to the pool. They just did their after-summer clean, repair, and water change and plan to reopen Monday. It’s always so nice right after the yearly maintenance. I plan to go Tuesday… figure it will be full of out-of-school kids Monday.

I’ve been watching a show, a television series, on Netflix, called Heavy. It’s about morbidly obese people who go through a program either here in Texas or in NC. Both programs require that the person go to a place where diet and exercise are controlled. The NC program lasts for 6 months and the Texas program lasts for 1 month away from home and 5 months at home, where they are provided a personal trainer and other support. If they need more intensive help, they can go back to the “boot camp.”

I find it inspirational watching these people who are as heavy or heavier than I am, turning their lives around. Of course they can’t do it all in 6 months, but they get a really good start and you feel like they are going to continue.

All of them I have seen are younger than I am. The oldest one I have seen so far was in her late 40’s, I think. The trainers push them into a rigorous exercise program that I know I could not do. I probably could have 10 years ago, and definitely could have 20 years ago, but my knees and other joints physically can’t now. I know I can do more than I have been in the pool, though.

One thing I am amazed by is how hard people who are fatter than I am can push their hearts. They get all sweaty and red in the face, or red and white splotchy. Their breathing is labored. You can tell they are pushing way beyond where I have. Since some of them have more serious heart and stroke risk than I do, I know i can feel safe pushing harder than I have… though not to the point that they do. I don’t have a medical team standing by if i overdo. 🙂

I am also surprised at how quickly they get used to their new activity and are able to do their exercises without pain. I am not sure that I could exercise as much, though, because most of the pain I have when I overdo is in my joints, not my muscles. Still… I can do more, push more than I have been. I am going to step it up physically.

Happily Luke is improving too. He hasn’t gone vegan with me, but he has been eating far more vegies than he used to and doesn’t fuss about meatless meals, or even strange meals. I think he even enjoys the odd concoctions I come up with. He has almost completely given up Cokes, hasn’t had coffee in over a month (because he knows he uses too much sugar), and he has cut sugar in his tea by half. He is drinking about half the milk he used to and using a quarter of the butter he used to (margarine). The scale isn’t showing much loss, but today he is wearing his tightest pair of work jeans and they are loose. He has done this on his own. I make it clear that he does not have to eat like I am. I don’t think it is fair or reasonable for dieters to make their families diet with them with that “if I have to eat this way, everybody has to eat this way” logic.

  3. Give up .. coffee? That’s mighty impressive. I drink it al the time, though I only add to it about once every two weeks. Usually honey, sometimes sugar.

Giving up cokes is something I’ve done. I drink them rarely. We don’t keep any soda at the house, so we only get it when we eat out. Eating out is something else we’ve cut way back on.

Anyway, I’m glad to hear about all the stuff ya’ll are doing. Weird, odd meals are pretty cool. Especially when you find a new favorite from something unexpected.
