Change of address

Well, everyone knows that I moved, and we need a post, so I might as well tell everyone where I moved to.

5101 Sandy Banks Rd
Raleigh NC 27616

It’s a 3 bedroom townhouse with an attached garage. I love having a garage again. It is just as wonderful as I remembered 🙂

Random find

I was using google to do some lazy math and some of the real results were spec sheets, book notes, and bible verses. One site caught my eye and I gave it a quick look.

http://biblos.com/

More or less it is a bible site that gives multiple versions, original hebrew text with word-by-word translation, and commentary entries. There is more there that I have not checked out, but the site looks pretty interesting for finding out more detail about particular bible verses.

Anyway, thought it might be of interest to somebody around here. Going back to the hebrew with word by word translation was interesting for the few verses I looked at.

Christmas 2010

A very good close to a very good year. We were all there (in person or by phone), but here are a few pictures from the event.

Thumb surgery

General announcement… I am going to have surgery on my left thumb on the 28th. The problem is that my thumb is becoming more and more painful when i try to do certain things. Typing doesn’t bother it, but sewing, stitching, cooking, wrapping presents, unscrewing lids, holding things, folding clothes, opening doors, pushing buttons, and sometimes just moving it sends a zinger shock and hurts.

The surgery is Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition. My doctor tells me the base of the thumb is a common place for arthritis to cause problems and this surgery is 90-something percent effective and should permanently fix the problem. He also says that right handed people usually have the problem with their left thumb. The right hand moves around while the left holds things still… which puts more stress on the left.

I am going to be in a brace that will keep me from doing anything (woohoo – no cooking!) for a couple of months and it will take a year to heal. After a year I should have most of my pinch power back and there should be no pain. Almost everything I have read online about the surgery, from people who have had it, is positive. I have yet to find anyone who regretted having the surgery. I am looking forward to being able to do things without my thumb zinging me every few minutes.

Ghostery

I just learned about Ghostery.

Don’t know if you all had heard of it already, but since Chris has posted some cool technical things here before I thought I’d go ahead.

Besides, it’s been a few weeks since the last post.

OK. Ghostery:

Ghostery sees the invisible web – tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.

After showing you who’s tracking you, Ghostery also gives you a chance to learn more about each company it identifies. How they describe themselves, a link to their privacy policies, and a sampling of pages where we’ve found them are just a click away.

Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don’t trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands.

I’ve been using it for about a week. I like it a lot.

Christmas Eve Theme

Alrighty… so it’s finally my turn. I’ve waited since 1997 for it to be my turn (cough). 😉

The Theme:
Fiber

Your Mission:
Interpret the aforementioned word to be that fiber is all around us (wood and derivatives, animal fiber, plant fiber, etc). Your recipient’s gift must be made of fiber. I’d love for us all to make our recipient’s gift by hand, but I know it might be unrealistic. However, I’d really love it if we could try to keep it a handmade fiber item of some kind.

Who gets who:
Chris got Kevin
Christina got Ramona
Ramona got Luke
Kevin got Nelia
Luke got Christina
Nelia got Chris

I am leaving the wee ones out of this one atm. If they choose to make something, then we will give it to whomever they make it for (Bonus to them). I’ll take care of them having something to open when we open the Eve gifts unless someone just has the perfect idea and wants to do something for them, then let me know.

The Liberal Culture of Death

I don’t know if any of you have heard of Wondermark or Dinosaur Comics. They’re online comics, and I find them humorous.

About 5 years ago, the Dinosaur Comics guy wrote this little gem:

The premise (if you didn’t go to the link) is that there’s a machine that predicts, with absolute accuracy, how you will die. But even so, there’s some ambiguity. You may know .. but you’ll still be surprised.

A quick question to Ramona

Hi Ramona!

Ok. Quick question. I think that you are a Harry potter fan. Christina said that you have at least gone as far as sorting yourself in a house – Ravenclaw, right? So, if something appeared that was markedly a Harry potter themed thing, would it end up in the. “um, thanks??” (and then sent to take space up in the closet). Or would it end up in the “oh this I shall wear to work when I can” Assuming of course that the item was something, say, that would be worn with other clothes.

Not that I have anything like that. Just curious. Or something.

The bothersome brother, Chris

One last surgery

Ramona reminded me that I should post here about Luke’s surgery. He went in yesterday at 9, surgery scheduled at 11. Fortunately, when the prepped him for surgery, they had us wait in a little space that included a small but adequate recliner because we were there till about 12:30 – almost 3 hours just waiting. They then moved us to the pre-surgery area and took him in at about 1.

He got out of surgery at about 3 and his doctor came to tell me all was well. That’s when I went out and called Ramona who called Chris. There was no cell phone reception in the hospital and just outside, though there was a signal, it wasn’t strong. Didn’t know for sure if i could make a second call.

I went back in and they called me to recovery at about 4. Then at about 5 they moved him to a room. The doctor said that his repair was small and no organs were affected so he could go home that night if he wanted. They were able to drug him with pills enough to control the pain so he decided to come on home. Of course, before we left he had to prove that he was capable of a certain bodily function which involved drinking lots of water and he was completely empty after surgery so that took a while. We got home a little after 11 – long day.

He is moving around now, getting a bowl of cereal for breakfast. He feels much better than he did yesterday evening. He is supposed to stay home for 10 days. I have a feeling that is going to be hard. He is not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds. Luke being home and not lifting more than 10 pounds? Hm.

I doubt if he is going to do enough to tear this surgery, though. From the way they described it, it sounds pretty secure. They cut till they found the tear, and then went a little deeper and spread a mesh patch under and beyond the tear area. They stitched that in place and then stitched every layer above it back together. The mesh doesn’t dissolve away; the tissue around it grows into it, and the doctor said that he will never have a hernia in that place again. The mesh makes a very strong patch.

And that is the story up till now…..
