  1. yeah chris and i have both finished.

i have almost called you a number of times to have some potter chat, but i didn’t want to be all fangurl if you hadn’t finished.

    review away

edit: I’ll also add that my chat time is increasingly limited because aleah is in full toddler exploration mode. i’m not complaining, really, she’s just busy and we’ve learned that when she gets quiet, you wonder with a little trepidation what she’s gotten into.

  2. OK …

Well, do I really need to do a review? I mean, that’s mostly for books I don’t actually expect anyone else to read 😀

    So…

I was having a not-so-good week that week, so I’m going to claim prior emotional disturbance. With that caveat firmly in place, I confess, I actually and literally cried twice.
First, when Dobbie died, because I didn’t see that one coming at all and I really didn’t know just how much I liked him till it happened.
Second, when Harry asked his mom to stay close to him. Just lost it.

Now. I was always firmly in the Snape is Good camp, so that fell into place pretty much as expected. Figured there was a plan between the two of them regarding the end of HBP. Consistency error – wanted to see the instant portrait of Headmaster Snape, just as there was the instant portrait of Headmaster Dumbledore. Oh well. I re-wrote that scene in my head to cover that. I sort of agreed with other fans that his motivation may have had something to do with Lily, but I don’t know how I feel about the total undying love thing. But OK. I’ll go with it.

Feel like there is a total lack of reaction/discussion to the fact that a mother’s love really saved Harry twice – first, of course, was Lily’s voluntary sacrifice, but second and also vital was Narcissa’s betrayal. Harry was still vulnerable, and if he had been revealed as alive some bad things might have happened .. but Narcissa made it possible for him to come to final victory. Mother’s love trumps the baddie.

Thought the whole ‘Harry is the 7th Horcrux’ camp was bunk. Well, there I am, well and truly wrong. Oh well.

I thought all the horcruxes had been mentioned in some fashion in all the preceeding books – thought there was some interview where that was hinted. Well, no; I can’t recall ever hearing of any diadem. (and passing mention in the room of requirement just doesn’t count!) I really thought it was going to be Ollivander’s missing wand. Again, shows why I just read and don’t go on record beforehand.

Still not sure how the Hallows were an integral part of the story. Seems like they were a bit over the top. Just me, and they were interesting and all, but they didn’t strike me as the truly important thing they seemed to supposed to be. I mean.. I guess… but not really.

Like that Ron got to explode & come back, like in GoF. Thought Hermione was a bit toooooo prepared for everything. But that’s her role. And she’s sweet and I like her.

Liked the epilogue OK, but I’m looking forward to the promised follow up encyclopedia of what happens next to everybody. Oh, and Albus Severus Potter? Sheesh, what a mouthful. Wish they could have named their children something more original than James, Albus, and Lily … we’ve seen characters in this series with 5 names (Albus etc.) so sticking legacy names in the middle seems to be a well travelled tradition. And if we’re going for all these legacy names, why is Ron’s son named Hugo? Shouldn’t it be Fred?
