Child furniture

Chris & Christina

OK, we talked about this a while back, said I’d send photos & dimensions, so here they are.

Toy chest is 35.3″ wide, 25.5″ deep, and 18.75″ tall. Yes, it would be completely repainted and have Aleah’s name on the top.

Dresser is 46″ wide, 18″ deep (though I’d allow 20″ to account for the mirror supports), and 27/63.5″ tall (first is just the dresser, second is dresser and mirror). You can see on the side where parts of the veneer peeled; I have those and need to re-glue. But still, you can see it isn’t pristine. Fully broken in already. There is a glass shelf that goes across the middle; you can see it on the ground right now.

Pictures are at http://ramona.4101.org/furniture/. First three of toychest; next three of dresser, then one of the desk. Didn’t take dimensions of the desk – probably not something she’s ready for yet. But, Mom, if you wanted to put out word to the other extended Azbill cousins – Lisa’s sons have kids now; maybe they would be willing to take it. It has been repaired, but not refinished.

  1. I think you had said the desk was out before, but i had forgotten.

I will take the desk if Chris and Christina don’t. I can keep it for them, or, if they don’t think they will ever want it, I will ask the other Azbills. It should stay in the family. You got it repaired which should help. I remember it was pretty shaky. What is required to repaint?

I have Chris’s old desk, for which he has no attachment. I have the television in the sewing room on it now. Would Jean’s desk support a small television?

The dresser, too…. I have always loved that dresser. The toy box… well… there is the problem of space. We’ll talk….

  2. The problem with the desk is that it had been constructed with glue and small nails. Over time, the glue dried out, the nails loosened, and in a few critical places the nails came out entirely. Those were the shakiest parts. Literally, the only thing holding that desk and chair together was the wicker.

So, now, the nails have been replaced with screws and more glue has been put down. There was one place on the chair where the wicker had come unwound a bit and torn off; what was left was re-wound and the rest of the leg was re-wickered. That wicker was stained to match, and it matches really well.

I deliberately did not have it refinished. What remains are the water stains and crayon marks and etc. that came from it having been used, and used by someone in our family. To me, even those marks have meaning and should be retained. But if someone – someone who can give it a long-term home – differs, refinishing is an option; the furniture people assured me it was an easy option.

The chair pad is hideous and I don’t think anything can be done for that.

And finally, yes, I firmly believe it would support a small TV. We’ve been saying that to create an actual office space for me, we could use that desk for my computer. In its current role as flat-surface-in-storage-room, it’s had many a box piled on it (though, admittedly, only the lighter ones) and nothing bad has happened yet. 🙂

  3. I’ll go through these in picture order….

The Toy Chest. I remember that toy chest! I remember unpacking it/packing the contents when we made the Lubbock -> San Antonio move. I seem to remember finding a pack of gum in the bottom, which I managed to convince Ramona to give me a piece of. Anyway, I’m afraid that box is way too massive to fit anywhere at our house.

The Dresser w/ Mirror. That one is a maybe. Right now we don’t have a place to put it, and we do have drawers for everyone right now. But it could go in the current guest room… if we didn’t have the shelves in there. So, keep it around if you can; we might have a place for it someday.

The Wicker Desk. Oiy. If you want to see it survive more than three months, keep it away from our house. Between the cats and Aleah’s joy of climbing, I don’t think it would be in good shape for long.

  4. Talked to your dad… we can take all… keep it for whoever wants it someday. I had not thought of the cats and wicker but i don’t think it will be a problem. I have a wicker basket big enough to scratch by my chair and they have ignored it. If they express destructive interest in the desk i can cover it.

  5. Well, it sounds like it will all be albe to find a home. That’s good. And if there’s space there with you, Mom, it might be easier to use that as a distribution point – as long as you have the space. Don’t want to push stuff back on you or clutter up your space either.

Now I’m thinking of the logistics of how to get the furniture from here to there. I’m thinking it will have to have something to do with Uhaul, either getting a full van or a trailer (and a trailer hitch on the Prius, won’t that be fun) and then driving. Loading the trailer and driving … those are things best done with a partner.

So … trying to figure out travel, loading, driving/flying, all that. Some of the thoughts ..
    >Fly Chris up here, we load, we drive down, I fly back
    >get trailer hitch on car, drive down, drive back and visit everyone in between
    >some combination of those two

I’m also thinking … if I’m driving, I can bring more back than furniture. So, Mom, you & I will have to talk – you’ll have to put the brakes on me bringing back everything 🙂 but I’m sure some of it will be OK to bring back – the things Aleah certainly isn’t ready for now, but will be soon enough ..
