Kevin & I were talking and the conversation wound its way round to Buck Rogers, that classic TV sci-fi show that I enjoyed so much, before I had sense.
Kevin did not remember Hawk. Hawk was my favorite character. I don’t really remember that silly robot that everyone remembers, and I can’t remember the theme song even though I practically sang along with it, but I do remember Hawk. And how cool he was. When describing him to Kevin, I told him that Hawk was the Spock of Buck Rogers. And we all know how cool Spock is.
Partly, of course, because he was a birdman and his costume was sooooo realistic and made it so believable and plausible that he was, in fact, a bird-man.
Sigh. So I looked him up online to remind Kevin of who Hawk was.
A man in a feather hat. And I was so impresesd.
Sigh. Hawk was still a cool character. With a very cool ship.
OK, so there’s a reason I didn’t know the words. But I could hum it!

And ps … the first search for Buck Rogers intro brought me here:

I was absolutely horrified. The scary thing is, it’s the same music.
I don’t remember the long intro, but i can believe it. It reminds me of the james bond movies intros. And other movies…it was fashionable to have beautiful women posing sexily. The long intro was to the movie that started the series. Likely we only saw it once.
So far as Hawk in his feather hat lol Yes, i suppose the costume was pretty bad. I remember thinking at the time that they ought to at least feather him more and some bird-like features would be nice. But look at Spock. All he had was pointy ears and straight brows. It was the acting that made the character. It was the same with Hawk. He was satisfyingly masculine and dramatic 🙂 and cool.
It is fun looking back at the movies and television shows that were so exciting in your childhood and seeing how hokey they were. Do you suppose todays special effects will look silly in 20 years?
I”m sure today’s effects are going to be easy to spot in the future. But I don’t think they will all look too terrible.
Today’s shows on the other hand.. I don’t think very many TV shows stand up to the test of time, especially sitcoms. Going back to look at old-time comic shows is especially painful. (Original Transformers, G.I. Joe and such. Most of Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner style shows still work though)
