The painted house

These are the color schemes we considered for the house……

lol OK, I used Photoshop (which i have again – YEA!) to try to see what the house would look like. It was so much fun we tried other color schemes.

I think the real one is obvious.. The colors are very true because these photos were actually taken after the house was painted to decide on the color for the doors. Luke replaced the garage door recently with a white door that is paintable but has a baked on enamel finish so he did not want to paint it. We had a choice: make the doors white to match the garage door or paint the garage door. We decided to go with the white doors.

After these were taken Luke changed the vents just under the peak of the roof to match the dark brown. Otherwise it is accurate. Perhaps i will add a 5th picture of the finished house if I think about it tomorrow.

We are not entirely happy with the colors (for different reasons). We are going to give ourselves 6 months to get used to it, then we will decide if we need to repaint.

  1. It is… Pink.

That’s not a color I would have expected. Certainly stands out right now. I’ll be interested in seeing what the color does after being in the sun for a while.

I’m not saying it is bad though; it looks good to me.

  2. Well, the color scheme kind-of happened. It is the 4th one, by the way. I wish i knew what it looked like on your computer. On one if my computer screens it looks very washed out and on the other about right. Who knows, it may look more vivid on yours. The color for the main part is called blushing bride at Lowes if you are curious.

We expected the main light color to be a little darker and a little less pink. The very dark is darker than we thought it would be but we tried several dark colors that were lighter but the one we used was the only one that worked with the light color that was not pink. The white doors were a surprise. I thought we would get a brown that was somewhere between the light and dark for the doors till your dad made it clear that he was not going to paint the garage door. I did the photoshop to get an idea of how the doors would look brown with the white garage door and it was odd, but the white seemed to work.

The windows trim painted the same color as the trim around the roof was your dad’s idea. Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. He likes it all the time.

His problem is the pink hue to the light tan. When the light hits it just right it is definitely pinkish. The color he wanted for the house had too much yellow in it. The color we had on the house originally had too much yellow in it. The bricks are pink. If you are going to have a tan that goes with the bricks you are going to have to go with the rosier hues.

We thought about gray to go with the dark bricks. I liked white and white would have been very pretty. When Pat had it primed in white it was beautiful, but Luke does not like white. He says it shows dirt too much.

Pat wanted white trim (where it is very dark) and when that was primed and the tan was painted, I think the white looked better than the dark does in the front. (On the sides i like the dark better.) But there were 2 problems with the white: The showing dirt factor and when it was white, the tan looked even pinker.

So I don’t know…… If we have to have white doors, i am not sure we should have had as dark a trim. I might have gone with the dark around the roof and a mid tone on the door and window facings.

And we may yet…. Sometimes I look at the house and it looks just wrong. The light too light and the dark too dark.. the tan too pink. Sometimes i dislike the facings on the windows and doors and the white doors…. but it is done and we are going to give it a little time. Sometimes when you become accustomed to something you like it more.

Ditto the bathroom color…… Wait for 6 months. I will either get used to it or paint it tan. Frustrating thing about the bathroom is that I am the one who wanted the color. After a while of looking at the sample on the wall i decided that i wanted toast like the other bathroom is painted, but by that time Luke and Pat had decided that they liked the green. I was gone when it was painted so i came home to the shock of going from primer white to the odd shade of green that looked better as a sample.

Luke likes it…. I got what i wanted but i don’t like it at all.

The house needed paint……. Even if we decide that it does not work, the work done is not a loss. The house needed repair and it was so dry……. If we paint again it will just be a matter of painting.
