Voodoo Doughnuts

At the Austin Zen Center there are tea and snacks available after the Saturday Dharma Talk.   The other day the ‘snack’ came from Voodoo Doughnut.  Voodoo Doughnut is open from Wednesday to Sunday – 24 hours a day, but they close on Sunday when they sell out.   Since doughnuts do have a shelf life, they do like a bakery does:  ‘day old’ doughnuts are available (really just ~8-12 hours old) if you are there to catch the deals.  Maybe they aren’t as fresh, but the price reduction can make it worth doing.

Or, if you’re like me, and feel like being a bit silly and don’t have a clue about what any of them are going to taste like…   Well, I went in hoping to catch a deal.  The deals come in two forms:  A box of random doughnuts for 6 dollars, or a bucket for 10 dollars.   They were all out of boxed doughnuts.  But…

So. Many. Doughnuts. Yep, we’re going to make ourselves sick if we’re not careful here.

They did have a few buckets.   So I bought one.  (it was either that or a simple dozen for 10.00 )  Oh, and that bucket – it isn’t empty.  Mostly empty, but there’s still a dozen or so doughnuts in there.  Bottom ones got a bit more smashed up than the rest, but that’s expected.

Sometimes the kids have a contest over who gets which doughnut (‘but I wanted the one with the pink sprinkles, not the chocolate sprinkles!’).  Not an issue today.  I think I broke the barrier between ‘rare treat’ and ‘unlimited resource’.  I’ll be trying these and figuring out which ones are worth re-trying fresh and which ones I’ll pass on in the future.   Like that pink one – Daughter said those were ‘too sweet’.  I haven’t tried it yet, but that’s impressive when she doesn’t want to finish even the 1/4 piece of donut.

Oh, and I also bought a fresh doughnut.  No Joke:  it’s the Cock’n’Balls.

Yes, it is cream filled.

Regular doughnut provided for scale.  To quote Christina:  “Oh.  It’s bigger than the pictures online make it look”   And really, the jokes just write themselves here.

  1. SINCE WHEN IS THERE A VOODOO DOUGHNUTS IN AUSTIN!??!!!!

These are the best unbelievable dougnuts EVER and they were only in Portland and made a huge deal about not going anywhere else and you’re telling me they’re in AUSTIN???

Like … oh my gosh. I am going to just die.

    So is Joseph.

And, by the way, the Diablos Rex is Joseph’s fav. Mine is the Tang dougnut, whatever they call it, with the utter genius of Tang and marsmallows on a doughnut.

And if they have any late night contests … hmm. When I was in Portland, they’d just had the ‘how many of ours can you balance on yours?’ open for men only, naturally.

Dude. OK, I’m off to do some Googling.

I cannot believe you didn’t tell us about this earlier.

The magic is in the hole!

  2. ps don’t anyone tell Joseph we are planning to go to Austin this week Wednesday and I am going to surprise him and
    O
    M
    G
this is going to be the best surprise for him in …. lots of units of time.

  3. Ok, easy to find on google and all that, but:

    OPEN:
7am on Wednesdays UNTIL Sunday day (when they sell out)

See, I heard about them a while back and… I’ve never been. I.. uh.. well, I was in Portland a few years back for a conference and I didn’t go get a doughnut, even though I’d heard such high praise before.

Wasn’t until they showed up at the Zen Center that I’d tried them or thought about trying them.

Having been to their store, I’m sure that parking is going to be a Royal Pain if you go at any ‘regular’ time. I went at ~6:30 AM on a Sunday, just to be sure I didn’t have to fight parking.

Oh, and they are Cash Only.

  4. Plans are laid to be there at 7am on Wednesday.

So, for those that are keeping track, the very first possible moment after I learned they were there.

    It’s cash-only in Portland too.

So – parking. Just street parking? I saw what looked like a public garage only a block or so away. Any suggestions on the best parking options?

  5. Honestly, I think you’ll be ok to park right in front of the place this wednesday. Day before Christmas Holidays – traffic dropped by *alot* between Monday/Tuesday, I’ll bet Wednesday is easy driving.

Parking is just street parking. There is quite a bit of around that area and I’d suspect you’d have an easy time finding something nearby that early in the morning.

Now I’m tempted to try and go there to say hi

  6. OK. Mischief managed. 🙂

I was parked in front of the store at 6:40. I watched them open the store and practically followed the lady in once she unlocked the door.

Dashed back home – without eating any; expression of true love right there.

Joseph unexpectedly met me at the door.

    Actual transcript:

    J: Eleanor’s still sacked out
R: Oh good. I was bad (holding box behind me)
    J: What did you do?
    R: I got doughnuts.
    J: (puzzled expression)
    R: (reveals box)
J: (stares at box. no words.)
R: They opened one in Austin!
    J: No shit
    R: Yes! I have a pink box!!
    J: We are fucked.

Whereupon we both set upon the box like ravenous hyenas.

We are going to be in Austin a lot more often. We expect to gain at least 3 pounds before Christmas.

  7. Just now finding this long string of comments about the doughnuts. Made me smile. Also made me curious enough to check out their site. They do have some unusual creative doughnuts. Have to say, though, that I would probably stick with my all time favorite, the apple fritter. Theirs looks awfully good.

And Chris… That is an unbelievable amount of doughnuts. How many were eaten?
