Kitty food

Another note in the ongoing Grailing saga….

The constant moist food routine was begining to wear on Kevin. So I called up the nutritionist to see if there was any dry food option that was permissible … well, actually, I called to see if re-introducing dry food for a meal would do any damage. I had no thought that there would be a permissible option available.

Turns out there is. And, as you would expect, my cats LOVE it. Finally, some real food, they tell me. Enough with this moist whatever-you-call-it. Sure, sure, it’s Turkey and Salmon, or Sardines and Crab, or Chicken and Herring, but whatever. Give us some of those tasty dry kibbles.

Wretched beasts.

So, in case any of you are interested, I thought I’d share that dry food option with you. The thing that makes it special is that it is all meat and fruit/veggie – no grains were used in the making of the food. So it is very low carb. And cats, as carnivores, don’t do so well with the carbohydrates. Not to mention the whole tumors metabolize carbohydrates side of the equation, which hopefully none of us will ever ever ever have to consider ever again.

Go to Foods > Foods for Cats: Innova EVO Cat & Kitten Dry. Or try going there directly.
The store finder is at the top. There are plenty of stores in Austin and Houston. I don’t know if they all carry EVO; you’d have to call and verify that.

But anyway .. it exists, there it is, and if you try it let me know how your cats react.

Actually, don’t let me know if you try it. Your cats reaction would probably be confusion.

Let me know if you get some and feed it to your cats, and if they like it or not.

  1. I found the closest place in Houston, which is not all that close, but is not so far away that the gas iwould cost more then the food. I am definately going to try this. I bought some high protein dry food from the vet and they liked it, but i think this stuff is better (or at least as good). Before i put a bowl of each down and watched to see which one they chose, then mixed the 2 together. I will do the same with this and let you know the results. (Even mixed you can tell which they like because they pick thru it and eat everything but the greenish pellets. The high protein pellets were the same size so I know it is not the size that they dislike.)

  2. I am curious about the food. I am also terrified that it would cost an arm and a leg and possibly the first born.

But when you know you have to feed each cat 3/4 cup a day according to the directions…it adds up quick…but i love my big kitties. no little runt cats here

  3. I have emailed a supplier here… if i find out the cost i will tell you. From what Ramona tells me it is not too bad, considering.

  4. I got the small bag, 2 lbs (it comes as 15 lbs, 6 lbs, and 2lbs) and it was $6.

So it is more expensive than Meow Mix, or even Eukaneuba, but you should be able to keep your first born child.

I’ll be getting more soon – at least by this weekend – and will be picking up one of the larger sized bags, probably the 6 lb one. I’ll price the rest and let you know.

  5. Here’s what I found in Austin…went to the nearest store which has ok prices.

    2.2 lbs bag 6.99
    6 lbs bag 16.99
    15 lbs bag 36.99

    canned food (also EVO) 1.09/can

got the little bag and two cans…we’re curious. The people at the pet store raved over this food too saying it was a really great product. And if our cats don’t eat it/like it…they’ll refund our money (the store will). I do like that it doesn’t have corn in it. We’ve been feeding Nutro Complete Care which is a good food, one of the better imo…but I fear I’m giving them cereal.

  6. We’ve just fed out kitties the new and interesting food. Christina says that it reeks. I agree, although it just smells like kitty food to me. (and reeky kitty food is usually great stuff)

Anyway, we put some of this new stuff in with the old stuff… they picked through the food to eat the new stuff.

And both cats ate. Side by Side. We never see this.

    This requires further experimentation.

  7. oh goodness….. I had thought that I would buy a bag and mix it into the regular food, at least till we run out of their regular food. I am going to have to drive way into houston to pick it up, though so i haven’t yet.

I did get some high pritein stuff from the vet a while back and mixed it into their food. They liked it. At first they picked it out, but after a while they went back to eating everything but the green pellets. It was not as high protein as this stuff is.

I was going to suggest a cat food enrichment plan (mixing it in) but you are already doing it.

  8. the wet kind, a trial:

ok this is super STINKAY…think canned chicken + fish + turkey … combined. if you think the dry food is bad….just wait. (however it is nothing compared to the stinch of cooked calf liver)

kitties say MERRROOOWWWWWW (ooooo goodie good, feed me now slave). mo talked (very normal) but blue also made big noise, which for him is more out of the ordinary.

they certainly lapped it up. mo took about 1/4 a can and blue somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2. we have left it down and suspect return visits throughout the night. mo probably would have preferred it more if it had that gravy stuff on it…but he’s not complaining, really.

it has the consistancy of a nice pate and you can see some small carrot/tomato bits. while it smells kind of gross, it actually is kind of like the better canned meats you can buy. seemed to be very nice and easy to eat. i would highly recommend this for toothless cats or even if a cat is sick/not wanting food. very little true chewing involved but very good for kitty. of course our catren think they need it as a treat, but it has met with approval. i really think they thought they were getting a can of tuna. for now everyone is washing up and napping.

i am silently glad that i am not able to change the box right now. i bet this will be special on the flip side.
