Christmas Eve Gift

OK. I am ready…… No, I’m not. I am in the process of deciding that yet another idea is not any good after I decided that it was what I was going to go with. My sympathies to all those, past and future, who have to name the Christmas Eve theme. (Except to those who think of something, name it, and go on with their lives without wasting time second guessing themselves.) Sigh………

Before i completely talk myself out if this…

The gift shall be an unusual Christmas ornament. It can be pretty, silly, or whatever, but it must be unusual (or seem unusual to you) and it must be an ornament which adorns the tree. It would be nice if it was also unique, but that is not a requirement.

I did the random gift exchange selector, but it has a problem. Do you, Chris and Christina, want to include Aleah and/or Donavan? It is up to you. Either way, you need to change it. Right now it includes Donavan and not Aleah.

I am not sure, but did we have a rule that spouse does not give to spouse? If so, when Aleah and Donavan join the game we should change that, making the rule only that we cannot give to ourselves.

I am trying to remember….how do we do this? Do I generate and post here or do I tell each individual who he or she has so it is as much of a secret as possible? I don’t remember. Seems like I post.

  1. Thanks for the reminder. A while back I added Donavan to verify that the random list generator I wrote would handle an uneven list. No problems with it, so I left it alone. I’ve updated it again to produce two lists: one with everyone, one with just the adults. Not sure if we’re putting the kids into this or not as they aren’t old enough to really “get it” yet. I should note that I didn’t make any kinds of exclusions in the program. Spouses can get each other and such.

  2. I think Aleah would like the ornament thing. She likes ornaments and she gets the present aspect of Christmas more than she did before.
Donavan would just be one more for me to make and he wouldn’t care at this point.

    That’s my .02 anyway

  3. my .02 response ….

I’m looking forward to having Aleah join in when shes ready – if she’s ready this year, such fun! Chris, I guess you’ll let us know what the two (three?) of you decide by how you modify the Random Assignements.

But I do think Donavan might be a bit young yet. Unless Christina’s really keen on finding (or making) three ornaments….

but, still, totally up to you two.

And on the assignments question – I think just post. It becomes known to everyone anyway, with us all asking around, and it’s easier to talk back and forth .. and it makes it easier to report on our spouses (to tell Kevin’s person that he just admired the My Little Pony ornament at Hallmark, for example).

On the spouse/spouse question – I think if it were a rule, it should be abandoned. If the random list came up with all spouse/spouse matches, I think I’d rerun it … but I wouldn’t make it a firm rule, or I’d ditch it as a firm rule (whichever way it used to be, which I can’t remember)

  4. If you don’t like the list the random things generates because it managed to pick too many couples… well, there’s a reason I put a ‘refresh’ button at the bottom of it.

I’d say post the list. We all figure it out eventually anyway. I’d leave Donavan out of this round. He’s more likely to eat the ornament than anything else.

  5. I just posted a suggestion, an answer to the general Christmas gift discussion, which included making the Christmas Eve gift the regular Christmas gift among adults (keeping the name a theme rule). If we did that, we would randomly generate for adults only so I am going to wait and see.

If we keep the Eve gift separate from the regular gifts, I think it would be fun to include Aleah (and since I am the one who randomly generates the names, I think I may randomly generate till I get her. 🙂 ) (seriously, I would randomly generate till someone other than “Mom” and “Dad” gets the children)

  6. I like the idea of rigging the random assignment so that Aleah (and later Donavan) go to the extended family. At least the first couple of years 🙂 Though of course if Mom ‘happens’ to get Aleah, I’ll be very suspicious. 🙂

I do hope we continue with the Christmas Eve, and I hope Aleah joins in. But I’ll sit back and await developments.

  7. Chris got Nelia
    Christina got Luke
    Ramona got Aleah
    Kevin got Chris
    Luke got Christina
    Nelia got Kevin
    Aleah got Ramona

Now this is absolutely not fair!!! Ramona got Aleah and Aleah got Ramona!

I just used the random generator and took the first one that either Aleah got Donavan or Donavan got Aleah, making it easy to change names so Donavan does not participate. That nobody got a spouse was just the luck of the generate.

Donavan is not participating? right? If he is, i will generate again.. or Chris or Christina can and delete this post.

Staying with Christmas ornaments, by the way. Next time around I will be more creative.
